The HEALTH+ melatonin capsules provide the body with 1 mg of the hormone that controls our body's day-night rhythm and promotes deeper, more restful sleep. Taken as a dietary supplement, the capsules are used to optimize and promote sleep.
Melatonin is a substance produced by the body in the brain, more specifically in the pineal gland. The precursor is serotonin, a neurotransmitter that can be produced with the help of L-tryptophan (or 5-HTP). It is also one of the body's strongest antioxidants and supports the fight against free radicals.
As soon as it gets dark, the release of melatonin is stimulated. The eyes become heavier, the feeling of sleepiness sets in and our body is signaled that it is time to sleep. For this reason, melatonin is also called the sleep hormone. While darkness promotes the secretion, it is inhibited by daylight or sunlight. The more light our eyes perceive, the less melatonin is produced and released. This also applies to the cold, blue light from monitors, tablets and smartphones, which many people use in the evening and in bed before falling asleep!
Permanent stress, poor sleep hygiene, frequent travel including jet lag and shift work also negatively influence melatonin production and release. The body's own synthesis also decreases with age and is influenced by the amount of nutrients consumed. If there is a deficiency of L-tryptophan, sufficient melatonin cannot be produced. Stimulant substances such as caffeine, pre-workout boosters, nicotine and alcohol, as well as medications such as ASA, beta blockers and cortisone are also known to cause low melatonin levels in the blood.
