Iron is one of the trace elements and has many different tasks in the body. One of the most important tasks is the transport of oxygen from the lungs to the various tissues and organs, the storage of oxygen in the muscles and the transfer of electrons in the energy metabolism. Depending on the body weight, the supply in the body is between 2 and 4 g of iron.

With 60% our blood, more precisely the hemoglobin, has the largest proportion of iron, followed by the liver, spleen and bone marrow (together approx. 25%) and the remaining 15% is bound to enzymes and myoglobin (muscle protein). This is where the special role for EISENsportler is shown ;-)

How does iron deficiency come about?

Deficiency symptoms are rather rare in Germany, but still occur. Because not only diet trends such as vegetarian or vegan diet lead to a reduced iron intake, but also growth (bodybuilders), pregnancy and blood loss (especially in women during menstruation) lead to a deficiency.

This shows that women in particular belong to the risk group and are significantly more likely to suffer from a deficiency than men. The daily requirement is 15 mg iron, but women only manage 11-12 mg per day, men get 14-14.5 mg iron / day.

How important iron is for us usually only becomes apparent when it is deficient. The first symptoms are increased hair and nail fragility, tears in the corners of the mouth, increased susceptibility to infections and dry skin. After a long period of iron deficiency, general tiredness and weakness and a disturbance in body temperature regulation can occur.

Is our food sufficient as a source of iron?

What is actually the problem with iron intake? It is not the amount that is relevant, but the absorption capacity in the body. Iron from animal food is absorbed to approx. 20%, vegetable food only makes it to approx. 5%.

Foods such as cereals, whole grain rice, corn, legumes and soy products also inhibit absorption in the body, even though they are high in iron. The absorption capacity can be increased tenfold if these foods are combined with fish, meat, poultry and foods rich in vitamin C.
