"I still remember exactly how it all began!"
Chapter 1 of Torch is not just any track. Chapter 1 is a monument, a manifesto, an exclamation mark! In short: one of the first milestones of what was then a young hip-hop scene in Germany. Countless vocal cuts and quotes on tracks by other artists are proof of the influence and relevance of Chapter 1. Even when it was first released on the "Alte Schule" sampler (MZEE Records) at the end of 1993, the title stood out in many ways - and is considered the undisputed highlight of a classic full of highlights.
Chapter 1 is a radical declaration of faith in hip-hop and gave the scene at the time substance and orientation. Already known as the frontman of Advanced Chemistry, a young, idealistic Torch describes the attitude to life of the hip-hop generation of the early nineties in his first solo track and, incidentally, records the names of the protagonists for posterity. In retrospect, almost more importantly: With its powerful message, Die Fackel inspired a new generation of heads to forge their own path in the rap cosmos. From the Stieber Twins to Blumentopf and RAG to Dendemann, Samy Deluxe and Jan Delay: countless greats cite Torch and Chapter 1 as inspiration and guide for their careers.
The comparison with Melle Mel's "The Message" is obvious: While it was mostly about partying and jumping, with beats at the 100 BPM mark, Torch significantly slowed down the tempo in Chapter 1 and put the full focus on the content and sound of his words. With a mature tone, sophisticated narrative structure and numerous cross-references, the Heidelberg veteran combined knowledge, passion and seriousness to a level never achieved before. With this, Torch provided a first taste of the profound, lyrical style with which he set the benchmark for grown-man rap years later on "Blauer Samt". In terms of sound, Chapter 1 was also way ahead of its time. Instead of "funky drummer" loops and obligatory soul breaks, Torch dared to try something new and broke new ground with British melancholic new wave samples at 86 beats per minute.
Already available as a stream on all platforms, Chapter 1 is finally being released on vinyl including the bonus track "Sandys Traum" from 1993.
